BanjoAcademy Testimonial

Hi Glenn I am sure you get a lot of thank you from people subscribing
to your site, but for what it is worth, my playing has taken a
noticeable positive direction. I had tried to teach myself many years
ago before the internet and was only able to get so far. I played only
well enough to embarrass myself and finally gave it up. A much better
banjo and your instructions were what I needed to get me going again.
Thanks again, Casey......

- Hi Glenn
- Banjo Academy is GREAT! It is exactly what I need to help me
learn. I
- suffered a catastrophic illness a year ago and had to stop my
regular
- lessons. I wish I had found Banjo Academy sooner.

After five months of taking one-on-one
lessons, I decided to join Banjo Academy due to a short conversation
with Glenn on BHO. Banjo Academy literally provides a wealth of valuable
information. I’m certain that everyone from the brand new beginner to
the professional banjo player can benefit from the material available on
this site. Equipment, Banjo History, Tab, MP3s, tunings, and much more
is available at the touch of your finger tips.
And it is just like those TV commercials, “But wait, there’s much more!”
The chat room experience was outstanding. Each question I asked was
responded to with an insightful answer. “Chucking” was demonstrated on
screen with an audio demonstration and verbal instructions. I was able
to cut-&-past the notes, provide via chat, directly into a word document
to review later at my leisure. Now the really cool part – you can reChord
the entire session in graphic detail with audio in the background. That
ought to burn up a few terabytes on a few computers.
To sum it up – banjoacademy.org is an intuitive site developed to
provide instructional materials to all banjo players. It was designed
and is operated by a professional banjoist who understands the beginner
to the professional. Absolutely outstanding, I only wish I had stumbled
onto it sooner. I give it an A+.

Glenn,
The quality of those videos were outstanding. That was great of you to take the
time to help everyone out. I learned something because I've never played Cripple
Creek the way you did! Thanks - Doug

Nice site and learning resource!

Since reading the above posts I have
joined Glenn's Banjo Academy and gotten each of his Practice CD's. Great stuff!
Glenn has a practice CD for each of a a number of songs: Cripple Creek,
Cumberland Gap, Hot Corn Cold Corn, Blue Ridge Cabin Home, Blackberry Blossom &
others. On each CD he plays the lead and switches to vamping (chucking) then
back to lead, etc. several times. Each CD has 10 to 12 tracks per song at
increasing speeds from 40 Beats per Minute to 120 or more BPM. I have found
these Practice CD's to be great for:
1. Ear training
2. Learning a song @ a very slow speed
3. Learning and practicing chord progressions on songs I already know
4. Cleaning up songs I already know
5. Jam practice (although it does not beat going to jams!)
6. Transition from playing lead to vamping (and back to playing lead)
7. Picking up speed on the songs - I can vamp now pretty good at Glenn's higher
speeds for the most part, but I have a ways to go to playing lead at the higher
speeds
8. It is an excellent tool for practicing (at various speeds) chords up and down
the neck, i.e.) you can grab 6 different G chords, 6 different C chords and 5
different D chords [well, maybe I don't count too well]
9. Lots of fun (this should have been # 1)
An additional use that I have developed for these practice CD's: I have started
using them for my "Stand Up & Play the Banjo" practice time. Standing up and
playing the jo is a toughie for me! I have made some pretty good progress with
this assignment I have given myself and the Practice CD's are my reminder to
work this area.
Glenn, thanks for the Banjo Academy site and the Practice CD's. I know it is a
long process for you to create each Practice CD but I am looking forward to
"I'll Fly Away" and other Practice CD's you create.

Hey! Tom
I my honest opinion the www.banjoacademy.org website is fantastic, a great
resource for those of us who don't have access to a banjo teacher, I'm a member
and I use it almost every day, Glenn shows you how to do rolls, forward and
back, fingerpicking techniques, fret hand techniques, and more importantly he
shows you how to play songs like Cripple Creek and Foggy Mountain Breakdown plus
many others, the site has lots of video, tabs, and song samples at different
speeds, so you can learn to play at your own pace. Glenn's site is a wonderful
work in progress that is updated weekly.
I think it is well worth the $39.95 a year.
Check it out!

Regarding these Practice CDs that
Glenn has put together & I like so much - I have discoverd a new (to me) use for
them. Today as I vamped through "Blue Ridge Cabin Home" I started doing some
improvising at the slower tracks Glenn has on the CD - I think "Blue Ridge Cabin
Home" is a great song to practice some beginner improvising since the chord
progression is so simple: G..C..D..G.. and @ the slower speed tracks it gives a
beginner like me a good opportunity to drop in some G licks, C licks, D licks...
to discover what fits and what sounds good to the ears. Maybe this idea could
help someone who might be thinking about an easy and a fun way to do a little
improvising.
